about

State of Confusion was a legendary Idaho punk band, one of the first from the Boise area to make a real name for themselves. Their roots date back farther than 1983, but that is the year is when the name took hold, and it all came together. They rented a house together which wound up being the location where both the police and the high schools would search for the local runaways. The band was comprised of three Idaho legends, Pat Schmaljohn (a/k/a Pat Brown,) his brother Scott Schmaljohn and Wayne Rhino Flower. Their live show was a blistering action-packed performance. Pat would use the entire stage, small or big, and would be fluttering four to five feet above the stage, airborne for most of the performance, while Scott and Wayne installed a fierce-paced rhythm and generally found ways not to bump into Pat. They had a very successful run before family issues, drugs and depression brought the band to its demise. Damnit! They were good. So good!

Several years later, they gave it another run with a more varied sound that appealed to grunge and alternative audiences as well as the traditional hard-core punk fans of State of Confusion. They added a few players and took the name the Treepeople, a band that is highly regarded as Boise Idaho’s best. Seattle, Washington has also claimed ownership of the Treepeople as they were from Boise but based out of Seattle for quite some time. Sadly, they disbanded in 1994, but still do the occasional reunion show without legendary rock star Pat Schmaljohn (Pat Brown.) In April of 1999, he tragically committed suicide. He may be departed but his music is not, nor will it ever be! Thanks, Pat, Scott & Wayne for all the great songs. You made both Idaho and Washington proud.
