I have put together over 300 albums in my lifetime, but the most enjoyable ones, are the compilations. Metal Meltdown was particularly enjoyable to me as it was one of the first records I produced and it exclusively featured bands from my backyard, Washington State. Pressing and moving 1,000 copies of Volume I was a dream. Moving onto a second volume and pressing another thousand copies was so rewarding. But Volume III would be different. The budget was bigger and some of the more recognizable Washington State bands from 1988 were all over it. (Dehumanizers, Coven, Kil D’ Kor, Lethal Dose, Show & Tell.) Throw on top of that up and coming bands like Cyperus, Tempt, Turmoil, Gypsy Kiss, and Crisis and open up the record with a hard-hitting song called ‘Flesh & Blood’ by Shock Treatment and we had an album every underground metal enthusiast wanted all over the world. The name recognition from the first two volumes landed a distribution deal from Enigma/Capital that sent sales soaring. In addition to Metal Meltdown III being the most successful of all the Metal Meltdown Volumes, it is also the most successful Washington State Metal Compilation ever. Sales topped 7,000 units before the distributor filed for bankruptcy. That distinction is quite an honor considering Washington State is also the home of two other classic Northwest Metal comps, the legendary ‘Northwest Metalfest’ and the most recent historical documentation on the Northwest Metalworx series. And then came Metal Meltdown Volume IV...
