about

The first of many volumes highlighting Washington State metal bands. Subway Magazine Editor, David Ulysses Portnow, ‘Ride The Subway Express to Hell,’ and Northwest guitar legend Dan Lacroix worked together to compile ten of the Northwest’s most celebrated metal acts. Dan’s band, DC Lacroix kicked things off with “Rip It Up.” Frontwomen Sylvia Lacroix used to dazzle audiences with her voice, stage presence, and sexual aura. DC Lacroix released two full-length albums on Medusa Records. Kil D’ Kor keeps the groove going with ‘Too Late.’ Subway Magazine and Sanaty Records collaborated on a split 7” record called ‘Northwest Connection.’ Kil D’ Kor occupied one-half of that split. Strychnine had a single circulating, in addition to their appearance on Metal Meltdown. Strychnine, like many of the bands on this collection, performed regularly at the infamous Gorilla Gardens in Seattle, Washington. Century lines up next with a brilliant song called ‘The Strike,’ featuring an old-school-metal-style vocal-performance that is worth listening to over and over again. Sashay followed up their Metal Meltdown appearance with the first-ever release on Ever Rat Records. Today, that single sells for forty-plus dollars on eBay. Slaughter Haus 5 is a real hip glam metal band that everyone in Seattle loved. They released a single and have recently had their back catalog purchased for 12-inch vinyl and CD release by NW Metalworx, slated for 2021 release. Slaughter Haus 5 recently performed at Metalfest in Seattle and will be playing to support their re-issue. Hellrazor marks the second female vocalist on the album. The ladies of Washington were always turning up and turning out to perform all over the northwest scene. Kaliber’s future after Metal Meltdown Volume One is a bit of a mystery. In 2013, a Danish rap band stole their name and their unique spelling of it. Bethlehem Steele pop into the next slot with one of the slower tunes on the record. Really different and really great! And Max Planck, (the other half of the aforementioned split 7” with Kil D’ Kor,) follow the slowest tune with the fastest and most bizarre song of all, ‘Starscream.’ Max Planck had their very own unique brand of metal. They gained more notoriety outside of Washington than within. Their “Kill The Pain” LP was released across South America. Please enjoy this treasure of antique Washington State Metal Songs.
