about

Seattle grunge-frontrunners Crunchbird was influenced by a wide-ranging array of artists such as Patti Smith, The Stooges, John Coltrane, Throbbing Gristle and Jimi Hendrix along with an Appalachian fingerstyle guitar. The name Crunchbird evokes a punk rock cartoon because, as Jimi Hendrix once said in an interview, "Cartoons can do anything." Crunchbird played their first show in August of 1987 opening up for Blood Circus at the now-defunct Seattle incubator club Squid Row. In 1988, frontman Jamie Crunchbird approached longtime friend Lonnie King (Dehumanizers, ASH, IMIJ,) Scott Gear and Sean Anderson to play guitar, bass, and drums. The sound became grungier with bits of funk, blues, feedback, and hardcore combined with poetry improvisations. This line up allowed Crunchbird to concentrate more on the storytelling behind the songwriting. The live shows created a party-like atmosphere. Crunchbird was active from 1987 to 1992. Their successes included opening for both Nirvana and Sound Garden. This is a re-issue of their most successful release and considered a Seattle Cult Classic.
