about

MISTRUST entered the Seattle music scene in 1984, after the demise of both the legendary high school metal band RUE, and the club-gigging, West Coast-touring ROTTWEILER. RUE garnered a perfect review in PIG RECORDS’ fanzine THE SUBWAY MAGAZINE, which covered metal, death metal, punk, and the like. Furthermore, as a journalist with my high school paper—titled by my place of learning as the Prep Press—I did a feature on RUE. PIG RECORDS’ predecessor, EVER RAT, attempted to sign ROTTWEILER to a recording contract, but unfortunately was unable to come to an agreement with the band.
In essence, MISTRUST was formed out of the remains of these groups, two of my favorite local metal bands. Chris Gohde and Owen Wright of RUE quickly recruited Michael Winston and Tim Wolfe of ROTTWEILER to record for the Pacific Metal Project. Kevin Wells was added on vocals, and the group recorded with top-flight metal producer and engineer Terry Date (Metal Church, Pantera, Overkill, White Zombie, etc.).
Wells was replaced by experienced studio vocalist Jeff L’Heureux (Culprit) for MISTRUST’s debut album, SPIN THE WORLD, released by Coma Records in 1987. It was re-released in Italy in 2009 by Heart of Steel Records, and once again in 2022 by our friends at NW Metalworx.
Howard Gray (Steel Sea), another veteran studio musician, was brought in to handle the vocal duties on MISTRUST’s follow-up, YOU CAN’T RUN AWAY FROM LOVE. Gray brought advanced recording skills to the band as well, produced the record, and shared the engineering duties. The album was mastered by Gray’s brother, Kelly Gray, in his own right a famed producer (Queensrÿche, Dokken, Candlebox) and musician (Operation: Mindcrime, formed by Geoff Tate after the Queensrÿche split).
During their run, MISTRUST supported Alice in Chains, Randy Hansen (now a fellow PIG RECORDS artist), Alice Cooper, Loudness, Stryper, and Paul Di’Anno’s Battlezone. After the band broke up, Gohde and Wright formed the fabulous MY SISTER’S MACHINE.
PIG RECORDS is ecstatic to bring this piece of Washington State music history to you, and wishes to thank James Beach and Kelly Gray for referring MISTRUST to us. It’s a project that’s near and dear to my heart.
